[LP] Daddy, What is Jazz?

$22.5 $36.67
DescriptionWhat is Jazz? It’s a question that echoes through time—and now it has an answer that sings, swings, and speaks to the soul. 804 Kids proudly releases “Daddy, What IS Jazz?” by The RVA Jazz Collective; a groundbreaking new album blending full-length Jazz compositions, spoken word narratives, and African percussion interludes. Led by visionary trumpeter and educator Bill McGee, the RVA Jazz Collective is a powerful ensemble of over 40 musicians and spoken word artists united in honoring Jazz as both legacy and living language. The project was born from McGee’s own experiences teaching music appreciation at Virginia State University, where many students were hearing about Jazz legends for the first time. At the heart of the album is a stunning new interpretation of  “A Garden of Peace” featuring world renowned pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, reimagined alongside his 18-year-old great-nephew Christian Bolar on keyboards and great-niece Cameron Smith on acoustic guitar. It is both a tribute and a family affair— redefining generational continuity in Jazz. Also featured is the electrifying J. Plunky Branch, a pioneer in Free Jazz and Afro Jazz, performing a fantastic educational piece he calls “Free Jazz.” Other Richmond Jazz luminaries contributing to the album includes: Desirée Roots and Fabian Lance, Weldon Hill with Billy Williams and Mike Hawkins, James “Saxsmo” Gates,  Lucy & Charlie Kilpatrick (husband and wife piano duo), trumpeter Bill McGee, who also serves as the album’s producer and creative lead. The project is co-executive produced by B. J. Brown and Robert Payne of the Richmond Jazz Society, further anchoring it in the city’s rich cultural and musical history. “Daddy, What IS Jazz?” is more than an album for young people (big and small)—it’s an education, a celebration, and a living document. Its format reflects its message: 8 full-length Jazz compositions, 4 African percussion interludes, and spoken word elements that frame the listening journey like chapters in a book.
