Verbena hastata (Blue Vervain) is an erect-growing, clump-forming biennial/perennial that typically grows to 5.7 ft. Blue Vervain has dentate (toothed) leaves in opposite positions on the stems. Verbena hastata blooms in late summer/early fall with purple flowers occurring in a candelabra-like arrangement at the top of the plant. Blue Vervain has a broad range of natural distribution, from Washington and California to Virginia and Maine. Verbena hastata can usually be found in full sun in moist meadows and floodplains, along roadsides, and wet ditches. We use Blue Vervain in our wet meadow, wetland, stormwater, riparian, rain garden, and floodplain mixes. Verbena hastata seeds are eaten by field, song, and swamp sparrows and cardinals. Blue Vervain foliage is a larval food source for the common buckeye butterfly (Junonia coenia). Hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers of Verbena hastata as are bees in the genera Agapostemon, Bombus, Calliopsis, Ceratina, Halictus, Megaare chile, Melissodes, and Triepeolus. Blue Vervain is a member of the verbena (Verbenaceae) family.
