Cornus amomum (Silky Dogwood) is an erect-growing deciduous shrub that typically grows to 9.8 ft. with reddish brown bark. If a stem of Silky Dogwood contacts the soil, roots can form at that position. Cornus amomum blooms in late spring/early summer with white flowers having a maple syrup-like scent. In late summer, Silky Dogwood produces blue or mottled blue and white fruit containing a single seed. Birds feed on the fruit of Cornus amomum. Silky dogwood is found from Maine to Illinois and Mississippi to Florida. Cornus amomum grows in full sun to partial shade in mesic to wet soils of moist woods, fields, swamps, and riparian areas. Silky Dogwood is a great addition to wetland, wet meadow, and riparian seed mixes. Cuttings of Cornus amomum are used for streambank stabilization. Silky Dogwood is a member of the dogwood (Cornaceae) family. The genus name Cornus is Latin for horn.
